“Backyard Streams and Trees: A Workshop for Cobb County Homeowners” will be presented on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 10 AM at the Gritters Library. Residents of Cobb County are invited to come and learn about backyard streams and what they can do to help make healthier streamside areas with trees and plantings. Natural Resources Conservation Workshop June 5-9, 2011

The Natural Resources Conservation Workshop is available to Georgia’s Rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. Students who have previously attended the workshop are not eligible.

The workshop focuses on the value, protection, and conservation of Georgia’s wildlife, forestry, soil, and water resources, including conservation in Georgia’s mining industry and takes place at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA. More than $17,000 in college scholarships will be awarded during the workshop, which features field trips, classroom instruction, and recreational activities.

CCSWCD Completes Shaw Park Stream Stabilization/Demonstration Site

CCSWCD has completed the construction of an urban stream stabilization/restoration demonstration site at Shaw Park in Northeast Cobb County. A full project summary is available here.

2009 National Conservation Poster Contest

The annual National Conservation Poster Contest provides kindergarten through twelfth grade students an opportunity to convey their thoughts about soil, water and related natural resource issues through art. It also highlights the educational outreach efforts of conservation districts and their state conservation associations, auxiliaries and agencies. The poster contest theme follows the annual Stewardship theme. The contest is co-sponsored by the National Association of Conservation Districts and the NACD Auxiliary.

Each year, the poster contest starts at the district level. Individuals and teachers with questions regarding district contests should contact their local district. District winners advance to the state level. For questions regarding state competitions, districts should contact their state association. Finally, state winners advance to the National Contest. National winners are recognized each year at the NACD Annual Meeting.

Posters entered into the Cobb County SWCD Conservation Poster Contest are reviewed by a group of professional with backgrounds in conservation, graphic design or education. The posters are evaluated on the following criteria:

Conservation message: 50%
Visual effectiveness: 30%
Originality: 10%
Universal appeal: 10%

State Certification Requirements

Anyone involved in land development, design, review, permitting, construction, monitoring, inspection, or any land-disturbing activity in Georgia must meet now meet specific new education requirements and be certified by the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission.
